With the 2025 Red Sox season in the rearview, it is now time to look towards the 2025 offseason and the 2026 season. This starts with the offseason which begins following the World Series this October, which will be won by either the Blue Jays, Mariners, Dodgers or Brewers. There have been press conferences, early news and rumors, and trade talks online regarding this offseason so let’s dive in. The biggest thing I am looking for this offseason is, do the Boston Red Sox have a plan, is there a plan on how to structure this team, or will we just see more disorganization.
To begin with, news just dropped yesterday Oct. 15th that Alex Bregman has opted out of his $120 million 3 year contract with the Red Sox. As of now rumors are swirling between local and national media that Bregman is likely to return to the Sox on a new deal. Although, if he does not return to the Sox, I would argue that the entire Alex Bregman experience was a complete failure for the Red Sox. The entire downfall of Rafael Devers stems from them signing Bregman, moving Devers off 3rd base after telling him he was the 3rd Baseman, and then trading him away after he got upset about it. This showcases the chaos and disorganization of the Red Sox front office in my opinion, with no actual plan in place. Despite the repeated attempts of telling the fanbase that they have a plan, and a direction they are heading in, this to me is another example of them not having any actual plan.
Obviously, with players like Roman Anthony, Garrett Crochet, Marcelo Mayer, Wilyer Abreu, Ceddane and other young stars, there does seem to be a bright future in the Red Sox horizons, although do they have a plan for this future? Building off the failure of a plan leading to the trade of Devers, and Bregman opting out, is this young crop of Red Sox talent going to miss out on Championship success because of the lack of a plan. This was already witnessed this season, with Roman Anthony and Kristian Campbell. The Red Sox called up Campbell to begin the year, sign him to an extension, then send him back down to AAA in mid June after a month or so of struggling. After that we do not see him once again in the Majors for the rest of season, despite guys on our roster getting injured and opening up spots on the team. On top of this, after expressing early on in 2025 that they do not want to call up Anthony and put him in a tough spot, that is exactly what they do this year after trading Devers and leaving a huge hole in the lineup they call up Roman Anthony to fill in his spot. Just two more examples of a lack of a plan. It just seems to me like there was no plan of when these guys should be called up and how they will fit into the roster, which is a common theme with this Red Sox Front Office.
These two scenarios from this season are what leads me into my concerns this offseason. In my view it is quite obvious what the Red Sox need this offseason, and what we have surplus of that we need to move. Breslow, Kennedy and the front office have a plan to execute these needs and moves. Middle of the lineup Power Threat, that should be needed number 1. Breslow brought this up in the end of the year press conference among other things, which is a good sign that they are aware of this. But, how will they execute solving this issue? They finished 2025 middle of the pack in home runs at 15th in MLB with 186 home runs this year, not terrible, but to win a championship they will need more. This leads into who is available in terms of a power threat for free agents this offseason. Do they bring back Schwarber, who will potentially be coming off of an MVP season, Pete Alonso is another option to provide power in the lineup, as well as Kyle Tucker. These are probably considered the 3 biggest bats available, but are the Sox willing to dish out the money for any of these guys, based on the previous offseason, I would guess probably not. Personally I would love to see any of these guys fill into our lineup, and all three can provide a much needed bat.
On top of a power threat in the lineup there are many other concerns and needs for this Red Sox team, and I do not want to dive too deep into all of them as it will take pages and pages. My second concern is defense, they were number 1 in the league in errors, NUMBER 1!!! Leading the league in errors will never win a championship and must be addressed. This I think is more of a coaching concern than adding people in the offseason, although there are players out there who are known to have good gloves, and they can add somebody to address this. Third concern, a number 2 starter in the rotation. Bello is great and I am high on Bello, but I think he is a number 3 guy not a number 2. Giolito may come back or may not, but either way I do not believe in him at number 2 either. We need to add a legit number 2 starter, whether we trade for one or sign one, this is a top three concern for this team.
The final thing I wanted to address in this blog is the outfield surplus. Somebody has to go to make room for all of our outfielders. Assuming Yoshida is our everyday DH, which is a whole other concern, we still have Duran, Anthony, Abreu, Raffaela, and Campbell who I am hearing may be playing outfield next year. One of them needs to be involved in a deal and has to go. Personally, I would like us to move Duran, at this juncture I think we know the type of player he is, we know him personally, and we know his upside. He is the oldest of the group of outfields, and has the least potential, on top of his mental mistakes that I cannot stand. Baserunning mistakes, outfield errors, lack of hustle in the field, chirping with the fans, the list goes on. His performance does not make up for his mistakes mentally and physically, he still has trade value, especially if packaged with some of our good young prospects, and I would like to see him gone.
These are my opinions, and I have many more I will continue to share over other blogs and posts I plan on making. I just wanted to shed light today on the needs of the Red Sox, my concerns about their plan of action, and what the result of this offseason will be. I know they have had some wins under the Breslow era such as the Crochet trade, and the Narvaez pickup, but with those it still seems like a lack of plan. With that being said, I hope they make the right moves this offseason to build a championship team for the 2026 season. I will release another blog in the near future, with my personal opinion on who they should attempt to acquire and why.
List of players I would like to see us go after this offseason, in no particular order:
Pete Alonso
Kyle Schwarber
Bo Bichette
Framber Valdez
Joe Ryan
Kyle Tucker
Obviously we cannot get all of these guys, just some players I would like us to go after if this deal is there. Would like to see the money saved from the Devers trade being used to help our team today!
